Why is chocolate good for you?

As someone born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, close to the cocoa production region of Barlovento, I have always loved chocolate.

Barlovento produces the cocoa variety Criollo. Chocolatiers use Criollo cocoa to produce the best cocoa powder on earth.

Connoisseurs grade Criollo among the world's top 5% cocoa for its exquisite flavor.

But some health "specialists" tell us chocolate is harmful, so many people feel guilty when they eat chocolate products and desserts.

However, according to Johns Hopkins University, chocolate consumption has multiple benefits.

Some of the benefits of eating chocolate are:

  • Increases heart health
  • Balances the immune system
  • Combats diabetes
  • Improves brain function
  • Boosts athletic performance
  • Reduces stress
Some of the supposed dangers of eating chocolate come from the excess refined sugar in chocolate products, not from the chocolate itself.

So in this cookie cake recipe, or any other dessert or drink, try to replace refined sugar with a vegan health alternative such as coconut sugar, brown sugar, or any other organic sugar.

You should also avoid refined sugar in your diet or minimize its consumption as much as possible anyway.
